Growing up in a single parent household and seeing his mom volunteer, study, and make ends meet as a newcomer instilled in Matias a strong understanding of some of the barriers families face, as well as a passion for social justice. Matias’s drive for creating more fair and equitable opportunities has led to his establishment of scholarships and bursaries and the creation of community organizations. 

As an elected official, Matias serves in the the Finance Committee at the Toronto District School Board where he has fought to ensure that students are receiving the funding they need to fulfill their educational aspirations and goals. During the last budget process, Matias worked closely with student trustee leaders, parent leaders, and community members to ensure that community and student needs were met.

Matias knows what it's like to be forced to choose between paying rent and getting groceries – and he knows that more and more families are having to make those difficult decisions. He wants to create a better community for the people of Humber River—Black Creek and is ready to do his part to fight for a more equitable Canada for everyone.
